WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS SHOULD YOU START?

Identifying a gap in the market or demand for a product or service is a big step when you are planning how to start your own business from home.
Consider what your skills and experiences have been to date. Is there a way for you to make money by freelancing?
The first business I ever started was a Saturday Drama Class. Drama was a huge passion for me, and I had spent years becoming qualified as a drama teacher. There was no drama class in the area, so this business was a no-brainer!
I’m also a qualified Speech and Language Therapist- there is a huge demand for private Speech and Language Therapy. If I ever wanted to start another business, this would be one that I’d seriously consider.
It’s not always necessary to have a qualification in the area of your business. Skill, knowledge of the area, and passion to stay motivated and work hard can also help you to succeed.
Consider starting a business in the following 30 areas:
- Website Design
- Coding/ Programming
- Freelance Writing
- Bookkeeping and Accountancy
- Catering
- Illustration and Design
- Personal Trainer
- Life Coach
- Dog-walking/ Pet Sitting/ Dog Grooming
- Baby-sitting/ Childcare
- Online or at home tutoring
- Start a music/ drama class
- Gardening/ landscaping
- FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon)
- Up-cycling Furniture
- Photography
- Flower Arranging
- Upholsterer
- Seamstress
- Growing and Selling Vegetables
- Laundry/ Cleaning
- Event Planning
- Travel Planning
- Interior Design
- Decorator
- Party Entertainer
- Be a Virtual Assistant
- Data Entry
- Be a Consultant
- Start a subscription service
KEY LOGISTICS TO CONSIDER

While starting a new business is exciting, there are also lots of logistical questions to consider. Spending time planning and getting answers to these questions at the beginning could save you a serious amount of time and money down the road.
- DOES YOUR BUSINESS REQUIRE INSURANCE? If so, what kind? I would recommend looking into Public Liability Insurance and Professional Indemnity Insurance.
- DO YOU NEED PERMITS OR PERMISSIONS FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Permits are common for new businesses, especially when working with food. These rules are different even within countries, so make sure you check out whether you need any special permissions to start your business.
- WILL YOU MEET THE THRESHOLD FOR TAX? It’s worth looking into tax before you start your business. This way there won’t be any surprises down the road. Start a clear and organised system for your finances so all of this info is to hand. It might also be a good idea to start collecting receipts for your expenses. Later, if you are filing your taxes, you can usually claim business expenses back. Talk to an accountant and see what kinds of expenses might be included.
HOW TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS FROM HOME + GET IT OFF THE GROUND

Branding is a key element to any new business and is vital from the outset. Strong branding will attract customers and add value to your new business, no matter how small it might be!
INVEST IN A GREAT LOGO
I go to Fiverr to find freelancers who can help me to design a logo, iron out problems with my website coding, and anything else I might need. They have a massive pool of freelancers who can help you with pretty much anything you might need for a pretty low price.
USE SOCIAL MEDIA
It’s important to suss out where the demand is for your new business, and how you will spread the word and gain customers.
Which social media channels will you use to promote your business? I would consider Facebook and Instagram to be the most essential ones, but Pinterest and Twitter are worth considering too. Keep your eye out for alternative social media platforms, too, and how they can help you to reach new customers. Check out this post on how to use TikTok to promote your business.
Do you have a strong circle of friends and family who can help you gain this initial traction? Use them! This will be vital for spreading your word about your business in the very early stages.
GET A WEBSITE
I believe a website is essential even for small businesses. I firmly believe that a website is important from the beginning, not just for later down the line when you’e ‘big enough.’
Why? A website is one of the best platforms for promoting yourself and your products. It will let you be searchable, and is a place for you to showcase your work. It takes so long for your website to gain domain authority and show up in search results (think 6 months plus), so the sooner you start it, the better!
You can even start a website for your new business for very little on Bluehost (just a few dollars a month).
Do you have a circle of friends and family you can rely on to get your business started and gain some traction in social media?
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

This might be a cheesy point to finish, but it’s an important thing to remember to create a successful business from home.
Almost no business gives instant profit, but the better you get at branding and marketing, the more growth you will see in a shorter time-frame.
For me, this starts with confidence– be confident in what you are offering and be willing to promote your business because you believe in it!
Ask customers for testimonials and share them with prospective customers- put them on your website so people can see. Share how your business has impacted your customers. Don’t be afraid to advocate for your business! Get comfortable with sharing it and letting people know the value of what you are offering!
And that’s it!
I hope you enjoyed this post on how to start your own business from home. There is a lot to think about, but it can allow you to do what you love, have flexibility in work, and even to quit your job and the traditional 9-5!
New businesses can take a long time to grow. If you have spotted a need for your business, and you are willing to learn, persevere, and be patient, I believe you can have a successful business from your home.
